چکیده

Blazars are characterized by large amplitude and fast variability, indicating that the electron distribution is rapidly changing, often on time scales shorter than the light crossing time. The emitting region is sufficiently compact to let radiative losses dominate the cooling of high energy electrons. We study the time dependent behaviour of the electron distribution after episodic electron injection phases, and calculate the observed synchrotron and self Compton radiation spectra. Since photons produced in different part of the source have different travel times, the observed spectrum is produced by the electron distribution at different stages of evolution. Even a homogeneous source then resembles an inhomogeneous one. Time delays between the light curves of fluxes at different frequencies are possible, as illustrated for the specific case of the BL Lac object Mkn 421.

How is the blazar GeV emission really produced ?

We show that the external Compton (EC) model for the production of the GeV emission in blazars makes specific predictions for the spectrum and variability of those blazars characterized by a high Compton dominance (Compton to synchrotron luminosity ratio). These unavoidable features have not been observed, casting doubt on the validity of this popular model. We argue that synchrotron-self Compt...

Analytical and numerical time-dependent modelling of SSC blazars variability

A time-dependent synchrotron self-Compton (SSC) leptonic model, developed with some analytical formulations and a numerical code is summarized. This SSC emission model, developed with some analytical formulations and a numerical code, allow to investigate quantitatively the multiwavelength spectral variability of blazars, providing estimates for physical parameters and the bolometric power. The...

A multi-zone model for simulating the high energy variability of TeV blazars

We present a time-dependent multi-zone code for simulating the variability of Synchrotron-Self Compton (SSC) sources. The code adopts a multi-zone pipe geometry for the emission region, appropriate for simulating emission from a standing or propagating shock in a collimated jet. Variations in the injection of relativistic electrons in the inlet propagate along the length of the pipe cooling rad...

Hadronic Modeling of Blazars

The ongoing systematic search for sources of extragalactic gamma rays has now revealed many blazars in which the very high energy output can not consistently be described as synchrotron self-Compton radiation. In this paper a self consistent hybrid model is described, explaining the very high energy radiation of those blazars as proton synchrotron radiation accompanied by photo-hadronic cascade...

Synchrotron Self-compton Model for Rapid Nonthermal Flares in Blazars with Frequency-dependent Time Lags

We model rapid variability of multifrequency emission from blazars occurring across the electromagnetic spectrum (from radio to gamma rays). Lower energy emission is produced by the synchrotron mechanism, whereas higher energy emission is due to inverse Compton scattering of the synchrotron emission. We take into account energy stratification established by particle acceleration at shock fronts...
